Kutomo Day Care Centre

The building is located between a residential area and a forested recreational area with large sports facilities.

The interiors bathe in abundant natural light and feature a tranquil material and color palette.

The dining area has strong visual connections to the yard and the surrounding forests.

The main entance to the building is from the yard side. The daycare groups have their individual entrances through the veranda on the first and the second floor.

The load-bearing structure of the building is primarily made of wood. The natural material palette creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Also the spaces at the building core, such as the vestibules, have visual connections to the surroundings.

Existing trees were preserved as much as possible. The trees and green roof canopies provide shelter and shade while enhancing the natural atmosphere.

The yard of the daycare centre connects seamlessly with the surrounding large forest areas.

Kutomo Day Care Centre

Description:

Daycare Centre Kutomo is located in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, surrounded by a lush forest that offers a natural setting for early childhood education.
The wooden-structure building provides facilities for 224 children and hosts both Finnish-speaking and Swedish-speaking daycare groups.

The building is positioned along the northern edge of the plot, maximizing space for a south-facing yard, creating a safe and stimulating outdoor environment. Existing trees were preserved as much as possible on the plot to maintain a strong connection to the surrounding large forest areas.

Sustainability was a key design principle. The building features green roofs, photovoltaic solar panels, and a ground source heat system, all contributing to energy efficiency and long-term environmental performance. The load-bearing structure of the new building is primarily made of wood. The natural material palette reinforces the connection to the surrounding landscape while creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for children and staff.
