Description:
Melkinlaituri School and Daycare Centre will be built in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki. It will be contructed as a life-cycle project with a 20-year service period. The building will have spaces for 615 pupils in comprehensive school and 182 children in pre-school and daycare.
The stepped shape of the building reflects the idea of the detailed plan, in which the buildings grow lower towards the shore to limit windiness in the yards and streets. The lowest part of the building is dedicated to the youngest users, the children in daycare. The tallest, three-story part houses spaces for the school. It forms a scenic accent at the corner of Samoankuja and Naurunkatu streets. Spaces that are actively used in the evening have been located along Samoankuja to create a lively streetscape.
The shape of the building emphasizes the continuation of the yard into the open landscape of the park and further out to the sea and the marina. The green roofs of the building continue the open, green landscape into the block structure.
The building has been designed with a strong focus on sustainability and flexibility. This way the building can easily adapt to changes in the future. The construction of the project has begun and the new building is scheduled to open in 2027.
