    Description:

This public high school building is located in Vuosaari, a local centre by the sea in Eastern Helsinki. The brick clad school adapts to a compact multi-level site next to a railway connection. Wood framed entrances, cascading roof terraces and ample public stairs bring life to the streetscape on three levels.

The energy efficiency of the school is nearly equal to a zero-energy building. Green roofs and solar panels are used to improve the ecological footprint of the building.

Music and art education is emphasized in the curriculum of Vuosaari high school. Therefore, the building has a cluster of rehearsal rooms, studios and stages. The lobbies and outdoor spaces are designed to accommodate performances as well.

The building complements the developing neighbourhood. In addition to being a high school for 900 students it is also a significant public building that serves the residents of the surrounding area. Different events by local organizations take place in the facilities in the evenings and on the weekends making the Vuosaari high school a central hub for the local community.
